Poverty at Rural Areas

Paddy field – time stop here

In every travel that running through I used to take pictures and learning something through eyes.

Paddy field

This is also happen when I travel to West Java couple months ago. As a researcher and humanitarian worker I sometimes wonder and have a lots of question, some I received and answers but most still mystery and I need to learn more.

Fertile land in West Java

How could in fertile land like this poverty increased? How possible farming as economical based for this area could not increased live quality?

This time I take pictures of farmers along my trip from Sukabumi and Kuningan and wonder how could they living in ancient time with no progress and no support.

Related to poverty terminology, that most of farmers in this area categorized as poor group with income less than 2 USD per day. Related to quality of live I could see that most of them living with limited facility and access to clean water and facilities both in health and education.

I wonder how to expedite poverty reduction in rural area where all resources available. I am wonder that who will take a lead and develop suitable formula to solve the problem.

“Tape” or fermented cassava as alternative livelihood

Some of alternative livelihood in handcrafting and other industry could not be able to increased their income. Lack of access to market and no support from government are reason behind this.

Hope that sometimes this could be solve, even community could dig a mountain as marble miners, why there no one help to support them and make community at rural area out from poverty.

Let’s think about that and there will be light somewhere.

Traveling with a small plane was thrilling as well as fun. Like when flight to Sarmi with a small plane. The town is taken 50 minutes by plane is located in the western city of Jayapura.

From the seats we could see clearly the aircraft cockpit.

On March 19, 2011 the Moon will pass by Earth at a distance of 356,577 kilometers (221,567 miles) – the closest pass in 18 years .

I don’t wanna miss my chance, with Canon EOS 60D go to Dok 2 beach where clear sky appear. Sky was not real clear with clouds but it is good enough to shoot supermoon pictures and some landscape at night.

Moon among clouds

Sky look so bright as you can see, I expected that electricity around Jayapura black out at this moment and everyone will go out and  look up to the sky.

Pesawat; satu-satunya transportasi menuju Wamena

Photography: Tablanesu and Harleem White Sandy Beach

Imlek holiday give opportunity for me and other colleagues to visit Tablanesu and Harleem beach in Depapre region. Just 2.5 hours trip from Jayapura city by cars and continue 15 minutes by boat to Harleem beach.

I used this opportunity to learn more about photography, nice beach (honestly I kind of enough with beach and sea), and white sandy beach.

A boat in Tablanesu beach

Harleem beach actually in mainland, but no land access and this make me used boat to reach this beach. Actually this is a very nice beach, isolated and long white sand beach.

Harleem beach, white sandy beach, an alternative place for some of people Jayapura

Transportation by boat is the only choice we have to reach this Harleem beach. Boat will drop us and they will also pick us. Don’t worry they will keep promised to pick up in time you had mentioned.

Photography: Jayapura Port

So many way to avoid dull moment in small city like Jayapura. I choose photography at current time, bored with Playstation and bunch of movies. Actually photography one of my late passion, travelling to several places enable me to see different situation, different view.

Jayapura port only a small port but with long history, during WW II Jayapura port was Base for US military.

Port of Jayapura, with long history from WW II

Jayapura port as important port to both cargo and people transport to and from Jayapura from another locations.

Jayapura is very much the result of the Second World War. Before the war the place was called Hollandia. What is now called Jayapura was then Hollandia Haven, while the real Hollandia, with the government offices, was Hollandia-Binnen, present-day Abepura. There were no good road connections between “Haven“ and “Binnen”. By 1940 the place had about 300 inhabitants. This was “the outer-end of the Dutch East-Indian Empire”.

After the successful invasion in April 1944 the Americans immediately saw the good use they could make of the two natural harbours, Tanah Merah Bay and the port of Jayapura (Hollandia Haven). The area became the basic Base for the attack on the Philippines and then on Japan . The rest of Indonesia was left under the control of, respectively, the Japanese Army (West Indonesia) and the Japanese Navy (East Indonesia ). Jayapura, stretching from Humboldt Bay till Denpapre on Tanah Merah Bay , came to have in the war all of a sudden some 170,000 inhabitants. Maybe never in history in such a short time such a large city has been created out of nothing. There were seven cinemas. The people were housed in Quonsets, build of such a good quality that after almost 60 years many still provide comfortable housing, as for instance on Pos Tujuh, Sentani, in Ifar Gunung and in Abepura.

When the Dutch returned to New Guinea in the wake of the Americans they established their headquarters at Kampung Harapan, about halfway between Sentani and Abepura. This was then named Kota NICA, the Netherlands Indies Civil Administration City. City was a very grand name for a place with some improvised buildings. Later the civil administration moved to Abepura, where the Governor build his “palace” out of the parts of the headquarters of  General Douglas MacArthur, which he had build on Ifar Gunung. The site of his house has a monument. This is situated in the compound of army barracks. (from: http://www.world66.com/asia/southeastasia/indonesia/irianjaya/jaya_pura/history).

Jayapura recently capital city of Papua Province, Indonesia with about 261.776 inhabitants, center of Jayapura start to be crowd city. Economic activities marked with many ships came to Jayapura city.

View from hills around Jayapura are amazing, just visit to one place you could capture tons of pictures.
